Alberta Lifts Restrictions on Temporary Foreign Workers

May 3, 2022

The program changes will help industries in Alberta that are suffering labour shortages.

To help employers meet their labour demands, the Alberta government is eliminating restrictions on employing new temporary foreign workers as of May 1, 2022. All occupations on the 'refusal to process' list, which was intended to prioritize jobs for unemployed Albertans due to the pandemic, will be removed.

This will help industries in Alberta that are experiencing labour shortages and are having difficulty filling open positions with Canadian workers.

The province will keep an eye on the effects and make changes as needed to ensure that the Temporary Foreign Worker Program continues to benefit Alberta's economy.

The Government of Canada is in charge of the refusal to process list.
